Addressing Mental Health Issues- The Need of the Hour


The society we live in today, is hesitant to talk about our mental health or illness. We all celebrate 10th October as Mental Health Day but we do not want to talk about it openly. Do we value our mental health as much as we should? Let’s take a step forward today and try to first understand it.

The society we live in today, is hesitant to talk about our mental health or illness. We all celebrate 10th October as Mental Health Day but we do not want to talk about it openly. Do we value our mental health as much as we should? Let’s take a step forward today and try to first understand it.

What is Mental Health?

It’s our emotional, psychological and social well being. Mental health is important at every stage of our lives, from childhood to adulthood. However, a bad mental health leads to stress and stress often leads to disaster. 13% of youth in the U.S reported suffering from at least one major depression. Only 28% receive consistent treatment and 70% are left untreated. If anyone experiences Mental Health problems, not only will their life be affected but also of those around them.

Some Factors giving rise to mental health problems are:

  1. Biological factors (Genes)
  2. Life experiences (Trauma or abuse)
  3. Family history of mental health problems
  4. Lack of indulgence in stress buster activities like meditation and vacations 

What are its signs? How to know who, when and where is living with mental health issues or illness? 

The following behaviours can be early signs:

  1. Eating or sleeping very little or too much
  2. Distracting away from people
  3. Feeling of helplessness or hopelessness as if nothing matters
  4. Excessive smoking, drinking or usage of  drugs
  5. Urge to harm oneself or others

There are numerous types of mental health problems that may arise due to various situations that we face in our lives but, once you have identified that there is something that needs to be done around this issue, you can turn it around. Mental health improves when you realize your full potential, purpose and make meaningful contributions to society including yourself.

Let’s see how we can maintain positive mental health on a personal level:

  1. Stay positive, whenever you have a negative though, try replacing it with good memories and something positive.
  2. Sleep and eat well, maintain a healthy routine and lifestyle.
  3. Become more physically active, it gives rise to various hormones in the body like Endorphins that can elevate your mood.
  4. Connect with others, seek and provide help.
  5. Indulge in expressive forms of art like music and dance.
  6. Meditate, it might be a bit difficult in the beginning but once you start experiencing its positive effects, it becomes highly addictive.
  7. If that doesn’t work, take professional help. Do not shy away from seeking help from psychologists and experts.
