India is a country known for its diversity, spirited culture, extensive agriculture and youth population. But it is also known for its improper governance, youth unemployment, delay in service, and high level of population with pollution.
More than 50% of India’s population is below the age of 25, and more than 65% of population is below the age of 35. India’s youth can play an elementary role in shaping and running the biggest democracy in the world. Still, as per recent reports, only 6% of leaders and ministers in government of India are below the age of 35 which is really very disturbing for today’s world.
A United Nations report of 2014 revealed that India is a country of 356 million young population which is at the top of the world. There is also a report authorised by UNICEF and composed by Ernst & Young stating that India will touch on several challenges in providing Indian youth appropriate skills. These include barriers like lack of quality trainers, proper timing of training programs, time counseling certification process and lack of participation. The report also points out that most of the institutions in India are still following outdated modules, inadequate infrastructure and aspects of capability make it difficult to provide students with relevant leadership skills demanded in a piece of work.
It is essential for India to combine the education with workforce preferences, soft skills, technical skills, and entrepreneurship. So that the youth can easily adapt leadership techniques in working environment.
The lack of awareness among youth about the government- run skill development programs is one of the major challenge. According to a recent study on “Young India and Work” by the Observer of Research Foundation and World Economic Forum, about 70% of Indian youth were not aware of these schemes.
India is one of the youngest nation in the world with over 65% of the population in the working age group. The unemployment problem affecting larger number of young people, keeping this in mind Indian government have launched several schemes like National Youth Corps(NYC), National Young Leaders Programme(NYLP), National Programme for Youth and Adolescent Development (NPYAD), National Service Schemes (NSS), Youth Hostels (YH),etc.
Purpose of these schemes are-
- Development of leadership qualities and personality
- Development of youth and to channelize their energy towards socio-economic development
- Bring up the sprit of adventures, risk taking, teamwork, the capacity of ready and vital response to challenging situations
- To encourage research and publication
- To promote technical resource support including development of information and database on issues concerning youth and adolescents.
These schemes work for the development of leadership qualities among the youth to empower them to realise their full potential. The programme aims at motivating the youth to aspire for excellence.
Youth represents the most dynamic and vibrant section of the population. India is one of the youngest nation in the world and is expected to have a very favourable demographic outline in the time to come. The department Youth Affairs has been operating a number of schemes for development and empowerment of youth .
It will be really important and profitable for India to bring out youth with their qualities to lead the country with their new and innovative ideas and strategies.
