Online Education- The Way Forward or an Emerging Concern?

Doctors say that for a young child to sit in front of the screen for long hours will result in damage to eyes and brain followed by obesity. What we need to think is, is online education really the way forward or an emerging concern?..

Though the uncertainties caused by the pandemic continue to dominate our minds, we have slowly learnt to adapt to this new way of living. The result of which can be seen in the field of education with classes for most students going online.

To counter the effect of the pandemic on the curriculum of the students, government and schools have decided to continue to teach students online. However, this in itself has had many challenges. Teachers were not accustomed to online teaching methods and technology and students, on the other hand, did not have the required equipment to access these sessions. The Indian government also ran TV channels to teach students of specific class groups in specific hours, but again the in-accessibility in rural areas couldn’t make this initiative as successful as it was planned to be, in addition to the inability of students to ask questions and clear their doubts on a real time basis.

Another issue with online education, as faced by authorities across the world, was to conduct exams which resulted in a lot of chaos between authorities, parents and children. Some authorities decided not to conduct online exams while rest chose continuous evaluations through past record, assignment and quizzes. The final year college students were left dangling as universities across the country decided to conduct exams offline as advised by UGC and AICTE with no predetermined dates.

However, the gravest of concerns, as expressed by psychologists, doctors and parents, are the health issues. Be it mental or physical, online education will adversely affect children in many ways. Psychologists and doctors believe that online education will have a long-lasting mental health issue on children if they are made to sit in front of the screen for several hours on a regular basis. They also believe that online education will make a child more introverted, leading them to disconnect from the real world and people around them. This can trigger stress issues and even depression in many students.

Doctors say that for a young child to sit in front of the screen for long hours will result in damage to eyes and brain followed by obesity. According to the stats stated by Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism, around 5-8.8% of school children are obese in India. And if the rates increase at a pace like this, 27 million Indian children will be obese by 2030. Obesity in children at an early stage can result in development of many diseases like high blood pressure, CVD, asthma etc. in adulthood.

The classroom education program is a blend of theoretical learning and practical implementation of it. A child’s mind grows by going to school though watching its surroundings and peer to peer learning. Online education would certainly miss these factors.

The question we need to ask ourselves is, is online education the way through this pandemic or some other alternatives should be thought of?
